Curriculum Intent & Implementation
Yox Valley Curriculum Intent
At Yox Valley Partnership of Schools, we believe in the concept of lifelong learning and the idea that both adults and children learn new things every day. We maintain that learning should be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for everyone. Through our teaching we equip children with the knowledge and skills necessary to be able to make informed choices and prepare them for the next stage of their education.
The Trust aims to develop pupils’ knowledge and skills in four main areas:
Personal Development, Creative Development, Community Engagement and Academic Progress
Children learn best when they are confident to ‘have a go’ and understand that they can learn from mistakes. We want children to know themselves as learners and how best to learn. Through a thematic approach, our curriculum ensures that meaningful links are made between subjects - deepening learning, mastering concepts, developing skills and acquiring new knowledge. Through the curriculum, pupils build on their prior learning, deepening their understanding and developing the skill to apply their knowledge and make links to new concepts.
We have developed our curriculum using an outline framework (Chris Quigley’s Essentials) which breaks down the skills required for effective learning into smaller chunks called Milestones. This provides a sequence of learning that builds pupils' knowledge, skills and understanding in each subject area of the curriculum.
As a partnership of schools, we have identified specific ‘Drivers’ for our curriculum, namely ‘Community’ and ‘Aspiration’, and these are a common thread that run throughout our curriculum. We have planned engaging and exciting opportunities which enable pupils to broaden their experiences of their local community, and further-a-field with the aim of preparing them to succeed in life in modern Britain.
